There are two significant types of SCIs that can result from a car accident, including:
- Complete Injury – When a victim suffers a complete SCI, he or she will lose motion and feeling below the point of the injury. The remaining movement and feeling that a victim experiences will depend on where the injury occurs along the spinal column.
- Incomplete Injury – When a victim suffers an incomplete SCI, he or she will retain some motion and feeling below the point of injury. And the level of feeling and range of motion will depend on where the injury occurs along the spinal column. Injuries to a disk are the most common type of incomplete injury caused by car accidents.
When car accident victims suffer SCIs, the loss of motion can include:
- Quadriplegia – Loss of motion in both arms and both legs, also referred to as tetraplegia.
- Paraplegia – Loss of motion in both legs and in some instances, the lower body
- Hemiplegia – Loss of motion in one arm and one leg that is confined to only one side of a person’s body.
- Monoplegia– Loss of motion in one limb, whether an arm or leg
Although there are no guarantees when it comes to SCIs, victims who are immediately transported to a hospital for treatment are more likely to recover. And in some instances, victims who lose motion in a limb, regain partial motion in that limb due to surgery or experimental treatment.
