A Certified Civil Trial Attorney is a designation granted by the New Jersey State Supreme Court to attorneys who are able to demonstrate sufficient levels of experience, education, knowledge, and skill in civil trial practice. The Supreme Court, through its Board on Attorney Certification, designates only those attorneys who apply for certification and are able to meet the rigorous standards set by the Board and approved by the Court. It is an honor held by only approximately 2% of practicing attorneys in the State of New Jersey. At present, there are four specialties areas of practice that are approved for certification: civil law, criminal law, matrimonial law, and workers’ compensation law. The certification program helps the public and other professionals find an attorney who have demonstrated proficiency in specialized fields. Certification also encourages the maintenance and improvement of attorney competence in specialized fields of law. Pursuant to New Jersey Court Rule 1:39-6(d) a Certified Attorney who receives a referral from an attorney who is not a partner or associate in that attorney’s firm or office may divide a fee for legal services with the referring attorney without regard to the services performed or the responsibility assumed by the referring attorney, so long as said referral fee is reasonable.
